No more crazy European lawnmowers that can cut wet grass

The post we made about the special ride-on mowers from the French company Estesia is getting crazy traffic. I guess a lot of people are looking for a machine that can mow wet grass.

Reader and industrial designer Niklas Ytterström from Sweden wrote to let us know that there is another company on this side of the Atlantic that makes a similarly designed machine. “I would recommend Gianni Ferrari, especially with central management,” writes Ytterström. “I used to work at the local cemetery during the summers in my early teens here in Sweden and it was very capable around the headstones.”

I dig the button on the ruffles

I had never heard of this company, because we can’t have nice things in America. So I checked out their home mowers and found that they did indeed have the same weird Yanks wedge-shaped form factor and rear discharge, with no chute to clog.

Like the Estesia models, they are also oddly narrow, in keeping with European domestic proportions. (However, every door on our property must accommodate a 54″ deck, otherwise that area will not be mowed.)

It occurs to me now, looking at the design of the Estesia and Gianni Ferrari bridges, that the blades must rotate in opposite directions in order to centralize ejection, which means the blades are mirror images of each other :

Notice that the blades “float!”

So you’ll have to be a little more careful when reinstalling blades or ordering new ones (unless the bevels are ground on both sides and you can return them). But I’d gladly put up with that hassle so I can mow the grass when it’s wet.

I also made the mistake of looking at Gianni Ferrari’s top-of-the-line unit, the beastly Turbo line for professional landscapers, and now I’m filled with envy.

Not only can you order one with a suh-weet closed cabin…

…but watch how these things unload:

I don’t care how high your neighbor’s fence is – you could totally throw your clippings in his lawn. (Although I guess they don’t do such things in Sweden.)
