Best inexpensive lawn mowers under £ 250

There’s no denying that a new lawn mower has the potential to be a very expensive purchase, but that doesn’t mean it absolutely has to be. We’ve tested some inexpensive lawn mowers for under £ 250 that will do a great job mowing your lawn, although some of them are half the price of more expensive competing models.

These aren’t all the best performing mowers we’ve ever tested, but they’re all the best buys, meaning they performed well enough in key elements of our tests that we would recommend them to our members. No matter how cheap a lawn mower is, if it’s not good at the core, we won’t pretend it’s good.

It’s easy to use and has a few cool features, which means it doesn’t look like a budget machine.

  • While it is a bit more expensive than some other mowers of this size, this Best Buy is one of the only inexpensive lawn mowers that is actually good enough that we would recommend it. It cuts well and gives your lawn a sleek look. It fills the grass catcher all the way, so you don’t run more than necessary to the compost heap. It’s lightweight, but looks like a sturdy machine, although not the best choice for large lawns.

Cheap lawn mowers to avoid

Just because you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a decent lawn mower doesn’t mean that all cheap lawn mowers are a good choice. We have encountered models that have trouble mowing even the shortest grass, are uncomfortable to maneuver, and inefficient at collecting clippings.

We’ve rounded up a few inexpensive lawn mowers that performed very poorly in our testing so you don’t end up with a dud. Log in Where join which? to see the full table.

How Much Do I Really Have to Spend on a Lawn Mower?

You could easily spend up to £ 1,000 on an all singing and dancing lawn mower, but that doesn’t mean you should. You are actually paying for extra features rather than good performance; although these bells and whistles may be important to some, they are by no means vital.

Features you can expect to see from more expensive lawn mowers typically include wider cutting widths, a self-propelled feature, and a more efficient battery (if you buy a cordless mower).

Price is very rarely an indication of how “good” a product is, and there is no way of knowing for sure how well a mower will cut your lawn until you actually test it.

Who? lawn mower reviews

To help us recommend the best lawn mowers, we spend weeks subjecting each model to rigorous series of tests under the watchful eyes of our lawn mower experts. To become a Best Buy, every lawn mower must perform well according to a certain set of criteria.

Mowing capability on a range of grass types

We test each lawn mower on a standard length lawn to see how it would perform in most gardens. However, we then really put it to the test on long, rough, wet grass to gauge how efficiently it can really cut.

Mowers are rated based on how fast they mow the lawn as well as how much effort it takes to move. Not all heavy, bulky mowers that take a long time to get the job done will end up being the best buys.

Grass collection efficiency

If a lawn mower comes with a grass catcher or bag, we test exactly how much clippings it will hold before we need to empty it. A good grass collector will hold up to 90% of its stated capacity, but we’ve seen mowers that hold just over half of it.

Ease and comfort of use

A great lawn mower should make mowing grass easier, which is why we make sure to only recommend models that aren’t too difficult to lift and maneuver. We also check how easy (or difficult) it is to assemble and take apart each model.

We consider how easy it is to operate the controls (e.g. changing the cutting height) and other essentials, such as the length of the cable and whether or not it is easy to clean.

Battery life

If you are considering a battery powered mower, you will be happy to know that we are testing how long each battery takes to charge to full power, as well as how many minutes of mowing time it will give you. The best models allow you to mow more than half an hour non-stop, but others fall far short of that.
